Most people picture a dental trip to Turkey as a clinic, a hotel room, and a flight home. It doesn't have to be that way. In Fethiye, the treatment is the reason you come — but the Mediterranean is the reason you'll be glad you did. This guide walks you through what a dental holiday here actually looks like: how to get here, what to do between appointments, and how to plan it all sensibly around your treatment so you recover well and enjoy yourself.
Why Fethiye, and not Istanbul or Antalya?
Most dental tourism points UK patients toward the big cities. We'd gently make the case for somewhere calmer.
Istanbul is a sprawling metropolis; Antalya is a busy resort hub. Fethiye sits on the Turquoise Coast — a working harbour town surrounded by pine-covered mountains, blue-flag beaches and some of the most beautiful coastline in the Mediterranean. It's the kind of place where recovery feels less like waiting and more like a holiday that happens to include a clinic.
That's the whole idea behind Smiles by the Sea: serious clinical work in a setting that's genuinely restful. You're not pacing a city hotel room between appointments — you're by the water.
Getting here from the UK & Ireland
Your gateway is Dalaman Airport (DLM), roughly a 45-minute to one-hour drive from Fethiye. It's served by direct flights from across the UK and Ireland, especially from spring through autumn, with airlines like Jet2, TUI, easyJet and Pegasus running regular routes. Return fares are often very reasonable when booked ahead.
Getting from Dalaman to Fethiye is straightforward, and we're happy to advise on transfers and recommend places to stay so you're not working out logistics after a long flight.
Planning around your treatment
This is the part most guides skip, and it's the most important. A dental holiday works best when your sightseeing fits sensibly around your appointments and recovery — not the other way around.
Your treatment plan determines the rhythm of your trip. A few general principles:
The first day or two centre on the clinic. Consultation, scans, and the start of treatment come first. Keep these days light.
After surgery or extractions, take it gently. For the first few days you'll want to rest, eat soft foods, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity, heavy sun, swimming and alcohol while you heal. Your clinician will give you specific aftercare guidance.
Save the bigger outings for once you're feeling comfortable. A relaxed boat trip is perfect; a strenuous gorge hike the morning after surgery is not.
Build in buffer days. Don't book your flight home for the same afternoon as your final appointment. A spare day removes all the stress.
We'll map your appointments out clearly in advance so you know exactly which days are free.
What to do between appointments
Fethiye rewards a slow pace, which happens to be exactly what you want while you recover.
The harbour and old town (Paspatur). Start gently. Wander the marina, browse the cobbled lanes of the old quarter, and find a seafront café. The Tuesday market is a local institution if your timing lines up.
A 12 Islands boat trip. The classic Fethiye day out — a relaxed cruise around the bay's islands and coves, with swimming stops for those who are up to it and shaded decks for those who'd rather watch. Low effort, high reward, and ideal for a recovery day.
Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon. One of the most photographed beaches in the world, a short drive away. You can simply sit and take in the view, or watch the paragliders drift down from Babadağ overhead.
Kayaköy. A hauntingly beautiful abandoned hillside village — an easy, atmospheric stroll through history, just outside town.
Saklıkent Gorge and Butterfly Valley. For your stronger days later in the trip, these are spectacular. Saklıkent is a dramatic canyon; Butterfly Valley is a secluded cove reached by boat. Both are best saved for when you're fully comfortable.
You don't need to fill every day. Many of our patients find the best part is simply slowing down by the sea.
A sample gentle itinerary
This is illustrative — your real schedule depends on your treatment.
Day 1: Arrival and transfer. Settle in, rest, light dinner.
Day 2: Clinic — consultation, scans, plan, begin treatment. Easy evening by the harbour.
Day 3: Recovery day. Old town, café, short stroll.
Day 4: 12 Islands boat trip (relaxed, shaded, optional swimming).
Day 5: Ölüdeniz viewpoint and a quiet beach afternoon.
Day 6: Clinic follow-up. Kayaköy in the afternoon if you're feeling good.
Day 7: Buffer / departure.
For two-stage treatments like implants, you'll return a few months later for the final fitting — a chance to enjoy Fethiye in a different season.
Practical tips
Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer warm weather without peak-summer heat and crowds — ideal for healing.
Pack: Sun protection, a hat, comfortable shoes, and any regular medication. Bring soft, easy foods you like for the first days if you're particular.
Stay hydrated and out of intense midday sun, especially right after any procedure.
Keep your documents together: passport, travel insurance (a specific medical travel policy if you're travelling for treatment), and your treatment plan.
Ask us anything before you fly. We'd rather answer ten questions now than have you wondering on the plane.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I stay? It depends on your treatment. Simpler cosmetic work can be a few days; full-arch and implant cases involve a longer first visit and a second trip later. We'll tell you exactly what your case needs.
Can I actually enjoy a holiday while having dental work? Yes — with sensible planning. Most treatments leave you plenty of comfortable days, and Fethiye is made for a gentle pace. The key is fitting outings around your recovery, which we help you do.
Can you help with accommodation and getting around? Yes. While we focus on your treatment, we're glad to point you to good places to stay nearby and advise on transfers from Dalaman, so the practical side is easy to sort.
Is it suitable to bring a partner or family? Absolutely. Many patients travel with someone, and Fethiye has plenty for a companion to enjoy while you're at appointments.
Come for your smile, stay for the sea
A dental trip doesn't have to feel clinical. Done right, it's a few days on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world — and a new smile to take home.
